Ayurveda
Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient practice used mainly by people in Sri Lanka, Nepal and India.
"Ayurveda" means “Life” and “veda” means “Knowledge”. This system of knowledge is defined as “a combination of body, organs, mind and soul. Is responsible for preventing decay, sustains the body and mind and guides the processes of rebirth.” It is an approach to health care and well being very similar to holistic medicine; looking at the well being of “the whole”.
Ayuvedic practitioners believe that stress is the major cause for many physical and spiritual ills. Many ayuvedic treatments involve detoxification, massage and meditation.
One popular therapy is Shirodhara. This involves gently allowing liquids to flow over the forehead – the
“third eye”. Liquids can include milk, water or oil depending on what is being treated.
The list of herbs and natural products used in Ayurvedic medicine includes powdered soap nut shell which is widely used as a body wash and a gentle shampoo particularly suitable for those with scalp disorders. Using Soap Nuts instead of conventional laundry detergents will benefit children and adults with sensitive skin (acne or eczema).
